The South African tutoring marketplace

Find a tutor for anything you want to learn.

Unotura connects you with tutors for any subject, from school and university work to programming, music and other skills. Book a session straight from a tutor’s calendar and pay in the app. We hold the payment until the session has happened, so the tutor is paid afterwards rather than up front. Online or in person, anywhere in South Africa.

Learn and teach from the same account, and switch whenever you like.

Free to join

Creating an account, browsing tutors and messaging cost nothing, for students and tutors alike. You only ever pay when you book a session.

Any subject. Any skill.

When a tutor sets up their profile they search for what they teach, and if it is not there they add it in their own words. The list grows with the people on it, so school and university work sits next to software, music and workplace skills.

Questions

What can I get tutoring in?

Anything a tutor here offers. There is no fixed subject list: tutors add their own subjects and skills, so alongside school and university subjects you will find programming, software, music and workplace skills. If nobody teaches what you need yet, it is worth searching again as more tutors join.

Which country do you operate in?

South Africa. Online sessions run anywhere in the country on video built into the platform, and in-person sessions depend on a tutor being near you, which their profile shows before you book.

Can I both learn and teach?

Yes, on one account. Add a tutor profile to the account you already have and switch between the two sides without a second login.

What does it cost?

Nothing to join. Creating an account, browsing tutors and messaging are free for students and tutors alike, and there is no subscription or listing fee. You only ever pay when you book a session.

What is the protection fee?

20% of the tutor’s rate, added on top of it. A tutor who lists R100 an hour costs you R120, and that is already the figure on their profile while you browse, so nothing is added at checkout. It pays for your payment being held until the session has happened, the same cancellation rules applied whichever tutor you book, and somewhere to take a dispute while the money is still on the platform.

What happens if a student cancels?

Cancelling is never refused, and how much comes back depends on the tutor’s policy, which their profile shows before you book. Flexible: free cancellation up to 6 hours before, then 50% back. Standard: free up to 24 hours before, then 50% back, and nothing under 6 hours. Strict: free up to 24 hours before, then 25% back, and nothing under 6 hours. Once the session has started there is no refund, because the tutor held the time and could not fill it.

What if the tutor cancels?

You get the full amount back whatever the notice, and their cancellation policy does not come into it at all. It goes to your Unotura credit, ready to spend on a lesson with someone else. If you would rather have the money back on the card you paid from, that costs you nothing: a tutor pulling out is not your fault, so you are not made to absorb any part of it.
